Indonesia Adventures: Arts & Crafts in Yogyakarta

Skills on display at Ansor's Silver
On this trip to Indonesia, I was prepared to see amazing sights and eat delicious food, but to also have some arts & crafts thrown in - well, that was an unexpected surprise!

I like making things. There is always a sense of satisfaction when you see the end product knowing you made it with our own two hands, so I was excited to give silver filigree and batik making a try in Yogyakarta - the centre of Javanese arts.

How did it go?

Let Me Spell It Out...

Sometimes you buy something and the moment you leave the store you're hit with that horrible feeling of buyers remorse. I can safely say that when I bought this Lightbox from Typo, I did not experience that at all.

In fact, the words above accurately describe how I feel about my new light box.

So far it has come in super handy as a blog/photo prop, fun personalised welcome sign for when people have come to stay with us, and just general display of silly words and messages.

An A3 sized version recently appeared on the Typo website, and although I am tempted, I am strongly resisting the urge. Seriously, I would have nowhere to put it.

Let me know what would you use the lightbox for?

It's Business Time!

Guess what arrived in the post today?... My business cards from!

It turns out, you kind of need business cards here in Hong Kong, because:
1) You never know who you're going to meet
2) Everyone else seems to have them.
There's been a few awkward moments when someone has extended a business card to me and I haven't had one to give back. Those moments will now be a thing of the past.

I had been meaning to order these for a while now, and when a free shipping code landed in my inbox, I thought - BINGO!

I opted for one of the existing Moo designs as the last time I ordered stickers from Moo using my own design, I got the sizing all wrong and they came out a little fuzzy. Oops. So I thought it would be best to play it safe this time round and figured the 'Hello' theme tied in with my Hello Jesso blog.

Anyway, that's all I wanted to share. It's always nice when you get something fun in the mail.

Let me know if you have any great networking tips in the comments below.

Make & Do: Handprinted Stationery

Work in Progress. Image made using - Studio
Making something takes me to my happy place.
People often talk about the rush of endorphins they get from doing things that make them happy, well making stuff does that for me. After a day of writing at the computer, sometimes all I need to do is get out my pens, watercolours, and a notebook and just doodle.

However, there are days when I want to actually make something tangible. I am by no means a professional arts & crafter, and a lot of what I do is trial and error, and often looks like a 6-year old made it (no offence 6 year olds) but it is the process of 'making' that I find most pleasing.

About a month ago now, I decided I wanted to make some stationery so that I could write some letters, you know - taking communication back to the old-school. So, I got out my tools and did just that...

Trying my hand at hand lettering and calligraphy

When we moved to Hong Kong, I had to make a decision on what arts & crafts stuff was going to come with me. To be honest, not a lot of stuff made the cut, and I only brought with me my rubber stamp carving tools and a few calligraphy pens - small, compact, easy to pack and transport. Since I've been here, I've carved a total of one stamp. Yep, just the one.

I love making stuff or just doing something creative, but without any of my art materials I've been looking for other creative outlets.

Recently, I've become obsessed with hand lettering and calligraphy, and am super jealous of illustrators / designers / calligraphers etc, who can all put pen to paper and conjour up beautiful letters and type. Ok, jealous isn't the right word... well, maybe just a tad. I'm actually very inspired by them and their creativity, and of course impeccable handwriting skills.

Hey hey friends

Just in case you wanted to keep up to date with whatever I post, you can in a number of ways...
1) You can subscribe to my RSS feed --> You'll find it over there by the social icons.
2) Follow by email --> Again, you'll find the box is over on the right
3) Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Hope that helps and hopefully I'll be able to keep up with some regular(ish) posting.

P.S Don't forget to check the archives if you ever need something to read, as sometimes I post about things that may have happened in the past, but I like to insert them into the blog as if I wrote about it at that time. Got to keep things in chronological order. Does that make sense?

After signing up way back in March, I've finally managed to put some items in it for sale.

It's only two items, so the store still looks kinda bare, but don't worry I am on the case!

Pop back to My Etsy every now and again to see what's new.

See you then!

Your Face? No, My Face

Hands up who loves the internet?
Me me me!

You are always guaranteed to stumble across something good that you may never have otherwise come across, and it's all available at the click of a mouse. Amazing!

I mean today alone Lady Jadey has shown me some pretty odd things, like this naked mole rat on Crazy Cute Animals!

Anyhoo... my discovery of the day was Your Face, a blog by illustrator Damien Weighill where you send in a pic of err... your face and he'll draw it and post it on his blog. You may end up with a moustache, laser eyes, or square head. Who knows?

You'll be in good company though as even her Majesty the Queen has had her face done (and I'm not talking botox or plastic surgery)

So I have sent off my pic and am waiting to see if he'll draw my face.

Till then I shall keep delving into the depths of the worldwideweb to see what other gems it throws up.

I am slightly obsessed with my Gocco, and so last night I decided to play with it some more.

After my simple first attempt and test prints , I thought I'd try something a little more girly and detailed this time.

So after much umming and ahhing, I opted for this floral print to go on some grey note cards with matching envelopes. The card looks white in the pics, but trust me, it is grey)

They are not perfect, but all in all I am quite pleased with them. I had a few issues with the ink blotting at the edges of the card, but oh well. It's all trial an error, and a learning curve. As they say practice makes perfect.

Need to get more bulbs and screens.

Did I mention the rather scary warning that features on the side of the bulb packet?... Something about the bulbs containing chemicals that may cause cancer, reproductive harm and birth defects. Eeeek! That can't be good at all.

Gocco-ing Mad

The severe lack of posting has been due to the fact that I am obsessed with my Gocco PG-11 printer.
Shopping for clothes and other stuff has now been replaced by wanting and craving Gocco accessories and ink. I want it all!

Anyhoo... just to show you I haven't been sitting on my laurels here is my handy work.

*Customised Moleskine notebooks

*Plain greeting cards

*Splodge card

As you can see, I only did one design - a fountain pen - as my tester. As it turned out quite well (I think), my mind is now brimming with ideas.

Have a look at all the other Gocco-ers out there and their wonderful creations.

I'm off to Gocco some more.
