21 Oct 2015

Taken from:
There's been a lot of talk on the internet of late about how October 21st, 2015 is the date that Doc and Marty went Back to the Future. I wonder what they would think of actual 2015?

Anyway, the reason I'm talking about the future is Lane Crawford.  As part of their 165th anniversary celebrations, Lane Crawford are looking to the future. What will the next 165 years be like? They don't have the answers, but they have put together a list of creatives and brands that they think are changing the perspective of the future and they've featured us - the InstameetHK team!

You can read what they wrote about Instameet HK here, as well as see a whole heap of inspiring creative talent here at #futureperspectives.

I am super honoured to have been included in this even if my picture does make me look like I'm about to eat the photographer. Don't worry, no photographers were eaten or harmed during this photoshoot.

Weekend Wanderings: Mong Kok

Mong Kok at Night by
The lights of Mong Kok. (Photo by me)
What did you do this weekend?

This weekend some friends and I took our cameras over to Mong Kok and walked around this vibrant area taking in the sights, sounds, and (sometimes the stinky tofu) smell.

We went to see if we could capture a little bit of this energy in our photos.
You can view my attempts at night time street photography over on my Hello Jesso - Tumblr.

Located in Kowloon, Mong Kok has been described as one of the most densely populated areas in the world, and when you're there, you can definitely feel it. It is the epitome of hustle and bustle. The streets are teeming with locals, tourists, workers, shoppers - basically everybody seems to be in Mong Kok.

What camera do you use?

A photo of my Sony camera taken with my iPhone
Let me preface this post by saying - this is not sponsored.

The title of this post is something I have been asked in the comments of my Instagram, and for the most part, my answer is - iPhone. The vast majority of my photos on Instagram have been taken by some iteration of iPhone, currently an iPhone 6.

However, lately the odd camera shot has been making more of an appearance on my feed. I know some people think this is taboo and Instagram should just be pics taken with the camera on your phone, but I wanted to share what I've been using, so:

If I'm not taking photos with iPhone 6, I use a Sony RX100 M3. That's it, just those two. Question answered.

In case you are interested in a rundown of my history with cameras, keep reading...

Meet My Friends (I met them on Instagram) by HelloJesso

Last year I wrote a post about my family on Instagram. Well, here's a post about my friends that I met via Instagram.

People always told me to be wary of meeting people on the internet, but I have met some of the nicest people on Instagram.

When I lived in London there is no way you would catch me meeting anybody from the internet. I mean, they could be all kinds of crazy! Plus, I already had my nearest and dearest friends that I had known for years and years. Why would I need new friends?

However, moving to a new country meant I had to be more open to new ways of meeting people. I met a few people through an expat forum, but the majority of my friends have come from Instagram.

Weekend Wanderings: Sunrise to Sunset

Weekend Wanderings: Sunrise to Sunset by Hello Jesso
Before sunrise
Welcome to another installment of Weekend Wanderings.

The last weekend wander was spent trying to hide from the heat of the sun in caves of Cape D'Aguilar. This weekend wander was purposefully spent chasing the sun.

Weekend Wanderings: Cape D'Aguilar

Weekend wanderings at Cape D'Aguilar in Hong Kong

Summer has arrived in Hong Kong. The days of 90+ percent humidity and 'very hot weather warnings' are back. This means it's time to hibernate in air conditioned comfort and only go out when absolutely necessary.

However, last weekend I braved the sun, the humidity, and the non-stop sweating and ventured out to Cape D'Aguilar -    I even made a video about it!

It's A Family Affair: Meet My Insta-Family

Meet my family on Instagram by Jess on
L-R: Top: @edwardkb || @jeromecan Bottom: @reycanlasjr || @keso_k
When I say 'Insta-family' I'm not talking about the people who I've met and become friends with through Instagram, I'm talking about my actual family on Instagram.

You know how the saying goes - "The family that 'grams together stays together." That's how it goes, right?

Ok, so let me introduce you...

Time to Party Party! - Fun Photo Apps

Fun Photo Apps by Jess on
Made with: Party Party

Whoa! I bet this was more of my face than you were expecting to see. Probably should have put a warning up. Oh well.

The other day as I was doing some essential reading - i.e. catching up on my favourite blogs, I came across this post from A Beautiful Mess. They had launched a new app called - Party Party.
It was an app that basically turned your smart phone into a photobooth-in-your-pocket. However, the feature that intrigued me the most was the ANIMATED GIFS! I couldn't press my thumb print down fast enough to confirm my purchase from the App store. If you haven't already guessed, I love a .gif.

I do quite like these fun photo apps. Sometimes you just want to pull a funny face and be ridiculous. So apart from Party Party here are some more of my faves currently on my iPhone...

Hey hey friends

Just in case you wanted to keep up to date with whatever I post, you can in a number of ways...
1) You can subscribe to my RSS feed --> You'll find it over there by the social icons.
2) Follow by email --> Again, you'll find the box is over on the right
3) Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Hope that helps and hopefully I'll be able to keep up with some regular(ish) posting.

P.S Don't forget to check the archives if you ever need something to read, as sometimes I post about things that may have happened in the past, but I like to insert them into the blog as if I wrote about it at that time. Got to keep things in chronological order. Does that make sense?

Project 365: My First Year Living in Hong Kong

My First Year Living In Hong Kong by

Well, that was the fastest year of my life - EVER!

I have now officially lived in Hong Kong for a whole year, and what a year it has been.  I can't tell you how much fun it has been exploring this corner of the world and meeting new people.

When I left London, I decided to start a photo Project 365 documenting my first year in Hong Kong. I took a photo a day and posted it on Instagram. I took pictures of stuff I saw, places I went, that kind of stuff. Basically, reminders that I could look back on in the future of this fun time.

Trip to the Mothership - Instagram Europe HQ

@edwardkb & @jesso at IG Europe HQ on
Here's Edward and I looking like we don't know each other on 'that' Instagram sofa. I thought we were going to pretend that we were fighting over the cushion. I was wrong.

Whilst we are home for Christmas, Edward and I popped in to Instagram Europe HQ and met with the lovely Community Manager - Hannah who kindly took this photo of us.

Prior to moving to Hong Kong, I didn't use Instagram a lot. Then it all changed and I got to know and meet other Instagrammers from the Hong Kong community.

Coming back home to London, I was excited to meet IGers (sorry going to have to abbreivate, Instagrammers is such a long word) from the London community.

We ended up having a little instameet and exploring the Tate Modern and Bankside and I got to meet a whole host of talented 'grammers - @missunderground, @danrubin, @tschang @zobolondon @mattpike @ecolephoto @Rich__ @hellopoe @chaiwalla @mrwhisper @evanjamesatwood, and so many more that I can't remember them all to list them.

You can view the photos from the day on Instagram under the hashtag #instameetbankside. Here's the first photo of the day, an #instagrammerdown group shot...

UPDATE: Oh, I also just wanted to mention a couple of other 'grammers I met on a different photowalk - @h_cato and @imaginationdetonation.

You should look up all of the people I mentioned. Not only are they super talented, they were all super nice too. Instagram fwends!

Say What?!

Instagram suggested users list by

Oh mah gawd! I woke up to the news today that I have been put on Instagram's Suggested User List!
First of all, thanks Instagram, and second of all, whaaaat?

I'm just a little blown away that I have been chosen. It's an honour.

I first joined Instagram in Dec 2010 and was one of those people who posted sporadically and wasn't entirely sure how or why I should use this app. I posted a lot of random photos in the beginning - food, nails, selfies - the usual cliche Instagram shots. It wasn't until this year when I moved to Hong Kong, that this app came into it's own.

Say Chiizu!

Current obsession... Mr Chiizu photo app on iPhone.

It makes all photos look like you're in one of those Japanese Purikura photo booths.

It's an app that is not taking itself too seriously and is just about having fun. With lots of different themes (fast food is my fave) I reckon there is lots of scope for this app to team up with different illustrators and create some more crazy themes.

Anyway, I'm off to create more ridiculous photos I can use as my profile pic on Facebook.

I Watched The Throne!

I was lucky enough to go and see the legend that is Jay-Z and the talent that is Kanye West, perform live for the last night of Watch The Throne at the O2 courtesy of my very generous Husband.

All I can say is... my mind was blown!

It was hit after hit and the place was loving it.

I don't know why, maybe it was the excitement, but the thought of bringing my camera totally slipped my mind. As a result I've only got a few blur-o-vision pics that I was able to take with my iPhone and jazzed up with a few apps in an attempt to recreate the Ni**as in Paris video.

I could watch them perform all over again. Until I am lucky enough to see them again, I'll just make do with the video...

Ha ha.. the term Bum bag never fails to make me chuckle. It's no better in Yank speak either - Fanny pack.

But you have to admit this quilted and studded lion head bum-bag from Topshop is amazing!

Thanks to my lovely pals who got it for me at Christmas.

Here is a little vid I made using my beloved Digital Harinezumi camera during our Christmas dinner.
It's a bit dark as the camera doesn't do so well in low light, so you may have to squint.

The quality of the video reminded me of the opening credits to the Wonder Years - where there was no sound, and all everyone ever did was wave at the camera.

Pass The Dunce Hat Please

This photo by Arthur Tress pretty much sums up how I felt yesterday.

Two of my friends got married and normally my problem is that I'll forget to charge the camera, and after two pictures my photo taking fun will be over.

So, this time I thought I'd be prepared and make sure that the battery was fully charged, and I did. Yey me!

Only problem was when we got to the registry office, I found I had forgotten to put the memory card in!

So pass the dunce hat please...
