HELLO KARA!

KARA backpack by hellojesso.com

Meet my new best friend... the KARA backpack!

I've always loved a backpack. Even when they were the key marker of a nerd. Even when wearing the straps on both shoulders was uncool. Even then, I still loved them.

Summer Wishlist: River Island Strappy Cami

This is now my second summer in Hong Kong, and I wouldn't say that I have fully acclimatised but at least I don't feel like I'm going to burst into flames like a vampire coming into contact with the sun anymore. Progress, right?

I've never been one for warm weather dressing. I'm a sweater, not the knitted garment kind, the sweating kind. This means I've always found it hard to dress for the heat. I don't want to be all damp and feel like my clothes are stuck to me, and god forbid visible sweat patches.

My Hong Kong summer uniform right now consists of a lot of denim shorts and sleeves tees and tanks. Although they tick all the right boxes in terms of comfort, sometimes I feel a little too casual. That's where these strappy camis from River Island come in...

Smart-ish, different from a regular cami/vest, can be dressed up or down, will keep me cool in the heat, and comfortable... tick tick and tick tick tick (or check, to you American English folk).

I've never been a huge River Island fan in the past as a lot of the clothes had far too many diamante details and embellishments for my liking, but I think these understated strappy camis are a winner.

All that's left for me to do is order them. Thank goodness they ship internationally!

If you have any tips for dressing in the heat or staying cool - feel free to share them in the comments below.

Annual blog post time!

It would seem I have fallen into the bad habit of posting once a year and then falling into a blogging slumber, not to be seen again for at least another 365 days.

Catch up post. What's been going on by hellojesso.com

Well, I am awake now!

PIN YA COLLAR!

It's been a while since I've been on Etsy, mainly because my own shop has been on hiatus. This has been due to partly being too busy with day-job stuff and also partly out of laziness.

The other reason I avoid Etsy, is that it's just too easy to spend ALL my money on things. Damn you Etsy and all your wonderful handmade stuff!

Sandro meet Zara: The search for a winter coat

I haven't bought a winter coat in years. I used to buy one (or three) every year, but it soon got ridiculous and I had more coats than cold days - hard to imagine when living in London, right?

I gave the coats a break and spent my sheckles on other things.

Now, the time has come when a new winter coat is in order [insert choir of shopping angels here].

I tried a few on in good ol' H&M (or as I like to call it - Hennes. Y'know, its proper name!), Topshop, and the usual high street haunts, but nothing was screaming 'BUY ME!'. I feared I had lost my coat shopping mojo. Woe is me. Think of the cold!

However, on a trip to NYC, I saw it. The One. The Sandro Michigan Bis coat hanging resplendently in Bloomingdales (or as I like to call it - Bloomies). I mean just look at it...

Did I buy it? NO! Unfortunately, its $810 price tag was a bit to hefty for my wallet, so I had to walk away. I may have shed a tear but I don't think anyone saw.

I tried to forget about Sandro, but I couldn't. Images of outfits that could have been played on my mind. Oh the adventures we could have had. Alas.

Then whilst walking past Zara one day, staring back at me was my coat. It looked like the Sandro, but obviously was not. Next thing I know, I was at the till buying it. Oh the joy it brought me. Screw you buyers remorse, you're not welcome here!

I've since seen loads of other retailers doing 'Sandro-esque' coats but I love my Zara one. I think it's the best 'inspired' version - obviously. God bless the high street!

Here we are after a day out together (ignore my awkward face)...

Watch It!

It was my birthday the other day, and what a birthday it was! Not only did The Husband take me for dinner at HIX Belgravia (which I've blogged about here if you're interested) but he also got me a super awesome gift!

He got me... A fancy watch! I feel so grown up.

Obviously, I LOVE it and have not taken it off since I got it! Aren't I a lucky lady!

For those of you interested, the watch is by Michael Kors and the bracelets are from good ol' H&M.

Plain Jane is not in right now...

I'm partial to bright colours and prints, especially when they appear on my favourite items of clothing - a blazer, boyfriend jeans, and an oversize shirt.

The following items are currently in my 'Saved Items' list on ASOS...

ASOS Throw On Pyjama Blazer, £50
ASOS Hawaiian Print Boyfriend Jeans, £35
ASOS Hawaiian Print Shirt Dress, £26

Clearly I wouldn't wear all of these together, that would just be mental. I'm going for summer casual, not crazy.

Carry on Longchamp

Seriously, I don't know why I don't just buy one of these Longchamp bags. I seem to be always 'wishing' I had bought one.

First I let this Jeremy Scott credit card pliage bag slip by.

Then this very appropriate Jeremy Scott 'Greetings from Paradise' tote ...
Hmmm, I'm starting to see a Jeremy Scott theme here.

Anyway, as both of these bags are long gone and consigned to the 'I wish' pile, my attention has been drawn to this Mary Katranzou 'Lantern' print tote

Wouldn't it just make a great holiday bag? I think so.

Aren't They Handsome?

In just a few days I will be in the Philppines [insert excited fit here]. The main reason I'm going is to see my family and celebrate my granny dearest 90th birthday, but whilst I'm there I plan to take in some sights, visit a beach, and y'know all the usual holiday things you do.

I'm also doubly excited as not only has it been about 4 years since I last visited, it will be Mr. B's first time in the Philippines.

Anyway, my thoughts have turned back to packing for this trip and after seeing this We Are Handsome instagram photo, I started to think about swimwear...

I own one swimsuit and a couple of bikinis. However, I've never been a fan of bikinis, mainly because I just don't feel confident in them. It's just a lot of flesh on show for me. Really, do people need to see my belly button? So I have fully embraced the swimsuit. Problem is I need more.

That's where Australian brand We Are Handsome come in with their inspired printed swimwear - animals, underwater divers, galaxies, or '50s retro photos have all become covetable We Are Handsome swimwear.

Philippines via. St. Tropez

After the torrential rainstorm that just passed over London, I cannot wait to see some sunshine.

Fortunately that won't be long now as next week I'll be heading for the Philippines. Excited at this point would seem like an understatement.

So of course my thoughts have turned to what to wear, what toiletries to bring etc.

As I make my virtual shopping list of 'essentials' that I must have for this trip, a couple of items that are screaming "TAKE ME" are these Wildfox Couture tees from ASOS...

Wildfox St Tropez T Dress
Wildfox Jet Set Inside Out Tee
Obviously I neeeeed these tees. If I don't have them, how will my fellow travellers know that I'm part of the jet-set? It's all very self-explanatory.

Champagne Pow Pow

This weekend my friend is leaving us and heading to the hills (well technically The Alps) to embark on an adventure as a chalet host for a ski season. An avid skier and all round outdoorsy person, I can't actually believe she hasn't done this sooner.

Usually I do get a bit jealous when anyone I know heads away on holiday, except for ski-type holidays as I'm just not into them. The potential for bones getting broken is too high. I do however love the thought of the apres-ski - roaring fires, hot chocolate, alcohol and food - or so I've been led to believe.

However the launch of Ashish's ski range for Topshop puts a tick in the pro-skiing box. I love a pun, so these oversize sweatshirts and hoodies emblazoned with a play on ski words suits me down to the ground. I'm also partial to a little bit of leopard print, so another plus.

View the full collection online at Topshop.com

Also for those of you wondering what 'Champagne Pow Pow' is, apparently it is "Very dry snow, which is often so light it can't be made into a snowball". Who knew eh?

London Fashion Week: Fashion Food Chain

Last week saw the circus that is London Fashion Week SS'12 roll around - a time when the fashion folk come out in force and the best (most interestingly) dressed take over the streets. What did this week mean for me? Well it definitely put me in my fashion place. Unfortunately, that wasn't at The May Fair hotel.

Schiaparelli Suite - The May Fair Hotel
Even though I pretty much know where my fashion place is (the bottom of the pile), I was lucky enough to get tickets for the  House of Holland show where I saw the likes of Eliza Doolittle, Jamie Winstone, Laura Bailey, Pixie Geldof, and good ol' Lorraine Kelly.

It turns out our tickets were 'standing' (I went with my friend) and we got there like total fashion newbs - way too early. Oh well. It would have been fine had it not started to rain. We cowered underneath the umbrella until all the important people had arrived to take their seats before we - the standing fashion plebs - were let in.

I haven't really, but I do really want this 'Destination' tee from Lazy Oaf.  I mean with this tee, who needs a stamp in their passport right?

I'm Too Weak To Resist - Liberty x Apple Collaboration

Tomorrow sees the launch of the Apple x Liberty collaboration and how can they seriously expect me to resist?

The collection has cases for all your Apple essentials - iPhone, iPad and MacBooks. Perfect for all you busy busy folk who need to travel with all your devices, but want more than just a piece of neoprene to put around your precious [insert name of device here]. You'll be the envy of your fellow travellers, who you'll see sneaking a peak at your case out of the corner of their eye.

I know you'll probably want to know which ones I'll be wanting right? No? Ok. I'm just going to go ahead and tell you anyway, so here goes...

Liberty London 13" Business Case - In Edenham and Betsy Print. I wish the business case came in 15" though so that the next time I go somewhere and need to bring my laptop with me, I could bring it one of these.

Just Call Me Dora!

My current fashion crush is none other than... Dora The Explorer.

Not for her pink and orange shorts and tee combo - even though I don't mind her yellow frill ankle socks - but because no one can rock a back-pack back-pack like she does.
I'm not looking for an all singing and dancing back-pack / ruck sack - because that would be weird. Instead I'd like some sort of leather or canvas option. My current two faves are:

Let's go! Vamonos!

Crowning Glory

Oops how slack of me, it's been nearly a month since I last posted.

In all fairness I have been distracted with mourning Lost, holiday research and booking our trip to Albi, and finally my birthday!

Speaking of which, my pals at the day job  bought me a lovely Jennifer Ouellette turban headband in an exclusive peacock Liberty print.  Lucky aren't I?

If you think you've seen this style of headband before, you prob have - it is a Blair Waldorf staple as all those who watch Gossip Girl will attest too.

I love it and think it would make a great holiday accessory - mainly because I love a turban. Just look at Grace Kelly on holiday...

Clearly, I wouldn't look like that, but it can't hurt to make an effort in the accessories department, even if you are just lying on the beach or lounging by the pool. After all, this is a much better look than sunburnt scalp!

Unfortunately I am not blessed with the dexterity to tie a head scarf, so that is why these turban headbands are a god-send. Now that I have this one, I of course want lots of other colour and print options.

Alternatively, I could just watch this tutorial on tying headscarves and turbans.

How to Tie a Turban

It's In The Bag

Remember back at school when having the right school bag was a big deal and choosing the right school bag for the start of the school term was not a choice to be taken lightly?

I do.

I was never really one to follow school bag rules, apart from the Benetton duffle bags that came in an array of colours and had the thin rope straps that really dug in to your shoulders and left (un)attractive red marks - you know the one.

I liked rucksacks/backpacks and wore them with both straps on my shoulders - oh yes, I pushed the nerdy boundaries, but I also liked bags that other girls at my school at the time would have thought 'granny-ish'.

At the top of my school bag wishlist was a leather satchel. A nice natural tan leather satchel complete with buckle straps. The ones that started off as that pale stiff leather (kind of like the leather of Louis Vuitton straps and handles) before softening up and turning a nice golden vintage colour thanks to the oils on your hands. Ahhh to dream.

Image from: Graham & Green

I never got one.

I remember the bags being about £70+ and way more than my mother felt appropriate to spend on a school bag.

Now that I am an adult... I have decided to fulfil my dream of owning a classic leather satchel with a Cambridge Satchel Company 15" yellow leather batchel (it has an additional top handle) complete with blind embossed initials.

In your face childhood!

The Short Straw

It may be snowing and it may be minus degrees outdoors, but I'm thinking about spring now.

I want a bit of warm sunshine, bright days, and enough of the S.A.D please.
I want to not have to wear my huge parka, two pairs of socks, scarf, gloves and hat, instead I want to start thinking about pedicures and sandals.

My current day dream is to trade in my knitted woolly hat for a straw boater.
Memories of my primary school summer uniform come flooding back - baby blue and white stripped summer dress, white thin belt, white or blue cardigan, all topped off with a straw boater complete with grosgrain ribbon trim. (FYI - In the winter we wore berets. I loved my school uniform.)

I haven't started my search yet for a straw boater, so far I have only seen this one from New Look.

... please hurry along Mr Sunshine.

Faux

I've always had a bit of soft spot for animal print. Don't get me wrong - I'm not talking OTT head to toe, animal rugs on the floor or anything like that. I'm talking the odd top, cardi, tank etc.

But now I want this Topshop Coat.

Super soft, super warm, and with just the right amount of '60s feel.

Long story short - I want. Husband no like.

He says it looks like a prostitute coat.

I say.. he's been watching too much Band Of Gold
